About the Symposium

In this session, Dr. Laura Tortorelli will focus on applying evidence-based literacy practices to meet the unique needs of multilingual learners. This approach involves tailored strategies to build foundational skills, enhance comprehension, and foster meaningful family involvement. Participants will explore how to create an inclusive literacy environment that values linguistic diversity, helping multilingual students thrive in reading and learning while empowering families to actively support literacy development at home.

Dr. Laura Tortorelli
Associate Professor at Michigan State University

Dr. Laura Tortorelli is an Associate Professor of Elementary Literacy at Michigan State University. Her research focuses on how texts, technologies, and teacher knowledge influence reading and writing instruction, particularly foundational skills. Recognized as an Emerging Scholar by the Reading Hall of Fame and a Jeanne Chall Visiting Researcher at Harvard, she leads the Elementary Literacy Subject Area at Michigan State, ranked #1 by US News for 30 years. Her current projects include the IDEAL project and Read STOP Write, both aimed at enhancing literacy instruction.
